Disconnect Switch Overview

If you’ve landed on this page, it means you’ve spotted one of our Battery Disconnect Compliance Stickers on your vehicle. This isn’t just a label—it’s a life safety protocol. At Code 1 Solutions, our mission is to reduce risk, protect assets, and ensure that every fleet vehicle is electrically safe when not in use.

What’s at Stake?

A fire can start from a forgotten radio, a wired-in GPS, or a power feed that should’ve shut off—but didn’t. We’ve seen total losses from avoidable wiring issues. That’s why we put our name on vehicles only when they pass our rigorous standards.

Our Service: Fleet Disconnect Safety Program

We offer a full-scale service for fleets that want to get compliant, reduce liability, and prevent electrical fires before they start.

What We Do:
  • Inspect each vehicle individually

  • Perform our 10-Point Electrical Safety Inspection

  • Flag any unsafe configurations

  • Certify compliant vehicles with a dated inspection sticker

  • Coordinate corrective actions for failed vehicles

Every vehicle that passes our inspection receives certification and an official Code 1 Disconnect label.

Our 10-Point Electrical Safety Inspection

Each vehicle is evaluated against 10 core electrical safety checks to ensure true shutoff, proper wiring, and technician-safe serviceability.

1. Switch Placement & Access
  • Check: Disconnect is installed on positive side of the battery

  • How: Verify wiring layout to prevent backfeed or grounding risks

2. Proper Labeling
  • Check: Switch is labeled clearly ("Battery Disconnect")

  • How: Confirm visibility to operator and emergency responders

3. Operator Reachability
  • Check: Switch is reachable by driver/operator without tools

  • How: Simulate a real shutdown scenario

4. Voltage at Switch Knob
  • Check: No voltage present on external knob

  • How: Meter probe check for potential short hazard

5. Aftermarket Load Shutdown
  • Check: All added accessories shut off with disconnect

  • How: Power up all lights/sirens, then kill main—everything must go dark

6. Correct Grounding
  • Check: No components grounded directly to chassis bypassing the switch

  • How: Visual check plus continuity test

7. Wire Routing
  • Check: Only wires routed from battery are to the disconnect

  • How: Visual + manual tracing of cables from battery terminals

8. Fuse Protection
  • Check: Main feed is fused close to battery

  • How: Verify fuse rating and physical location

9. Wire Gauge Rating
  • Check: Cables are sized appropriately for load

  • How: Inspect size, insulation, and confirm with load chart

10. Switch Function Test
  • Check: When switch is turned ON, all systems boot cleanly without ECU delay

  • How: Verify start-up sequence and accessory behavior

What You Should Do

If you're operating a vehicle with a Code 1 Disconnect label:

  • Always shut off the master switch when parking the vehicle

  • Never bypass the switch for convenience—it defeats the protection

  • If you see a disconnect switch that is hard to reach, broken, or ignored, report it
